There is a lot of history that lies in the town of Smyrna. It gained its European-American roots in the early 19^th century. Smyrna was important during the Civil War because the railroad station lies between Nashville and Chattanooga. During the Civil War, a local hero Sam Davis was charged for spying on the Union Army. Sam Davis gave up his life instead of releasing information the Union Army. He was captured November 20, 1863, and was hanged by Union forces on November 27 of that year.  The historic Sam Davis home is located on 168 acres at 1399 Sam Davis Road, Smyrna, TN 37167.

Smyrna is also the hometown of the Japanese automobile manufacturing plant, Nissan.  The Nissan plant is one of the largest automobile manufacturers under one roof.  The first vehicle was produced here in 1983. Nissan is located on 800 acres at 983 Nissan Drive, Smyrna, TN 37167.
